Why you need to write at least once a week on your website

My goal is 2012 is to post at least once a week, most weeks twice a week, to this blog. I’ll do it first for myself, as I need to get my thoughts on paper.

And I’ll do it for you, dear readers, as I owe you more consistency than I’ve given you in the past. Look for new posts on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays.

I’ll also do it for my business, and you should too. There are MANY reasons to do this for your business website, and I’ll share my 3 best reasons writing at least once a week will be good for your business.

Value – more information about how to use your product or service, innovations in your space, interviews with experts and customers, and relevant events that are in your local area are all great ways to add value to the lives of your readers.

Relevancy – The more information you write about your topics of expertise, the more relevant your website and by extension you and your business look on those topics. Take time to understand your topics, and why they matter to your readers, and write about them at least once a week.

Freshness – I share this in all my presentations about why you should write articles frequently. If someone comes to your website and the most recent article was published in November – of 2010 – they’re going away and not coming back. Think about this: Nobody reads the Sunday paper on Thursday. Would YOU read the Sunday paper on Thursday?

If you need help, create an accountability circle or find yourself an accountability partner. I found one in Lisa Sullivan. No, you can’t have her. Find your own :) Or ask your spouse to be your partner on this. My wife is a GREAT accountability partner, reminding me she enjoys reading my writing a lot. Thank you both for your help.

  • I totally agree Phil. At least once a week, more if you’re trying to establish yourself in the community as a source expert.

    I think that especially as you start out as a blogger, you need to pump out content. Either start out with a number of articles first, or be pumping out articles very frequently. I think that as a reader, it’s hard to add a site to Google Reader if they only have a handful or articles. You want to know that they’re going to be committed.

    I’m working on 2 articles per week my self on my blog. Crossing my fingers that in 2012 it gets even more traction.

    • Interesting thought Flavio. I have subscribed to blogs with 1 post on them, if that 1 post is super awesome. In fact, I’d rather get a quality article than have 20 crappy ones.

      That being said, I do encourage folks to have at least 10 articles done before they start promoting their site, lest they be very discouraged.

  • I totally agree. I think it’s important to consistently write. I stopped writing my personal blog because of time constraints but it certainly helped my credibility when I was working freelance. Currently, I’m in charge of my companies blog and I try to stress these same concepts to my team daily. Some people still don’t accept the value that blogging can bring to a brand (personal or otherwise).

    We aim to have 2 blogs up per week and I try to write one personally at least once a month.

    • Companies need to blog more. It’s too bad many don’t embrace it, but I see that too Kristina. Wonder why they see the value of an untargeted press release but not of a hyper targeted article…Hmmm….

  • Great parable: Nobody reads the Sunday paper on Thursday! :) It’s also a great idea to have someone who keeps you accountable, like your wife. I need to get myself a wife to take my blog to the next level. LOL :)

  • I totally agree with you. We’re living in a fast moving hyperdynamic world. News from last week nearly as old as news from last year. I started my own blog as a resolution for this year and I hope I can keep up with writing at least 2 articles per week.

  • Looks like 2 is the magic number…that’s my commitment to adding blog content for this year as well.

    The good thing about an accountability partner is at least you know SOMEONE is reading your blog :)

  • Great reminder Phil; I’ve taken a break over the holidays, however plan on writing at least once a week in 2012. I think there was only 1 or 2 weeks in 2011 that I didn’t post.

    As I’ve been on holiday’s over the last few weeks, I’ve noticed a significant drop in my website visits, so blogging weekly is vital. And, if you can blog twice a week, like you are doing – that’s even better.


  • Writing is my perfect outlet for stress. It’s a therapeutic exercise that feeds the mind and soul with good insights, new knowledge, and wisdom. I love doing it and I enjoy thinking that what I will be writing can potentially help or enlighten other people so I strive my best to provide fresh and latest updates to my blog every week (even if it means writing 2 or more article per week). So to all the writers out there, keep up the great work! Keep on inspiring and may this year be blessed.

  • I’m teetering between 2 – 4 times a month. I used to do 2 – 3 times a week and I didn’t get that many comments on my posts and I’ve found that if I post less often, I get more tweets, G+, and Facebook shares.

  • I post blogs on my website every week as blogging has been proven to catch people’s attention. They are more interested in reading those blogs and more often than not, these entice more visitors to the site.
