What is Social Media?

by Phil Gerbyshak on August 10, 2009

I have been trying for a long time to explain WHY social media matters to you and your company. I’ve put together a few nice slides, and for some, they get it and it makes perfect sense. For others, they pat me on the head and they don’t get it.

I am delighted to share this presentation with you. It wasn’t done by me, but by someone MUCH smarter than me, and I think it’s perfect! It’s 87 slides, and worth the time it takes to click through them.

In my opinion, the biggest lesson is all the way at the end:

The Basic Rules of Social Media

  • Listen
  • Engage
  • Measure

That’s it. Thanks for watching :)

  • Any questions?

You can click on the download file link in the presentation and if you’re a member of Slideshare (which doesn’t cost you anything), you can grab this presentation as a nice ebook in PDF form to share with those who don’t get it. You’re reading this blog, so I’m guessing either you do…or you want to get it.

    Thank you for your attention.

I’ve seen this slide show shared shared on various sites around the internet so nice to find the author’s site. Great images and very clear. Thanks for that!

Sorry if I made it seem like it was me who created this. I updated the posting a little more to make it more clear that I just found this…and that I’ve done other presentations like this (but none this good).

Phil, thanks for upping the visibility of this. I’ve thought about it for days. There’s a msg in the underlying emotional frustration of the author that I’m trying to decode. I remember the first time I saw a demo of the internet. Our VP of Mktg didn’t get it! Perhaps people get defensive and clamp down in an illogical way when you show them too much change? Does it work better to say: “Your customer segment is doing _____”, than to say: “You need to be doing _____”. Is there some basic human psychology that you and Marta are up against? Should the msg be that change is rewarding and not that hard?
