I’m currently waiting for my aircraft to get serviced so I can get to where I need to be for days of outstanding training. I was supposed to leave at 7:30 AM this morning, but due to fog/rain/weather, my flight was canceled as of 12 midnight. Thankfully I was awake to call and get rebooked, and they told me nothing was available today. Of course, that wasn’t true, they just didn’t have today’s schedule figured out yet. So I called back at 8:30 AM and got on the 1:35 flight. And now I wait. 2 PM and I get an update. Let’s hope so!
Tom Petty’s video of The Waiting is keeping me company (embedding is disabled, so click The Waiting to watch/listen for yourself), so I thought of all the things I’m going to work on while I’m in the airport.
- Write at least 2 blog posts (this is one, the other needs to be written for my management and productivity site)
- Catch up on all my emails
- Read blog feeds I haven’t read in a while
- Read the new version of Jeffrey Gitomer‘s Sales Bible
- Sleep
What do you do when you’re stuck in the airport? Do you agree that The Waiting is the hardest part or is there something else that’s tough about traveling?

Sometimes, when I’m waiting, I do something useful like picking my nose. No wait… I didn’t mean to say that. Fetch! My backspace key is broken. This is really swell. Stupid computer. Maybe this is a feature in vista….
Since we typically fly out of the same airport, I thought you should know my 7:00 AM flight did not get cancelled…although it was delayed more than an hour. So while you were waiting, I was enjoying sunny Los Angeles and a tour of the Disney studio before my speaking gig. Hope you eventually got out.
Love the Tom Petty reference…I think I’m starting to rub off on you!! In honor of you, I’m gonna write a post on that song in the very near future.
Just had a remarkable experience. I flew to Los Angeles from Chicago and back and BOTH FLIGHTS on United were exactly on time.
The pilot announced, “I hope you are all giving us some credits for this one!” We applauded. They have had a bad rap lately.
As a former travel agent, I have some advice for delayed flights.
Never believe what they tell you at the airport. Call reservations on your cell phone. They know what is happening.
And they will make a new reservation for you right on the phone instead of your standing in a long line!
Much as I’d like to do something useful while waiting for a flight to board and leave, I just can’t. I wonder around the terminal, stare out the window, whatever. Must be the anticipation of the journey or something
