- If you inherited $20m right now, would you spend your days the same way you spend them now?
- If you knew that you had only 10 years left to live, would you stick with your current job or career?
Those are the 2 questions Sital Ruparelia challenges us with to get your career back on track. I have no doubt those will help you get your career on track. This is a very tough economy, one that’s forcing us all to re-evaluate what we REALLY want.
So I thought about these questions, and I realized, the answers to those questions are not what I want to be known for. They’re not how I want to be measured at the end of my days.
I want to measure my success at the end of my days in another way.
- If you inherited $20m right now, would you spend your days with the same people you spend them with now?
- If you only had 10 years left to live, how much would you be sad about what’s left on your bucket list?
These are the 2 questions I’m going to invest much of my 2009 finding the answers to, and making the changes to align my life so I can answer YES, and NOT MUCH.
I’m going to work on my people bucket list, and my experience bucket list, and start being more honest with myself.
What are you investing your energy in this year?
Is the end worth it, or are there changes you need to make?
Be honest with yourself, and make it great!
2009 is your time to shine! Make it GREAT!

If I had that kind of money, no I would not do what I do now. I would have a more confortable energy efficient home. I would keep all my friends and spend more time with my family. that is what is important to me. If I was told that you only have 10 more years to live, I would be happy knowing that I would be spending the time with the people that matter the most to me.
Good suggestions Mike! Sounds like you’ve got a plan for a great life. Here’s to getting more good stuff in your life in 2009!
Those are two great questions. Thanks for posting them, I have been setting and resetting my goals over the last few weeks and have run into a few road blocks with what I truly want, but I think these questions may really benefit me in identifying what I really am striving for. Thanks a lot!
You’re welcome Joe! I’m glad they are helpful. Best of luck on your journey of exploration.

A helpful book re the bucket list, and perhaps the origin of the term is
How Full Is Your Bucket? Positive Strategies for Work and Life http://www.amazon.com/Full-Your-Bucket-Positive-Strategies/dp/1595620036/ref=pd_bxgy_d_img_b
Re those two great questions, some evidence of God’s wry humor
(yes, I may be projecting) is that the things we humans most crave
cannot be bought (at least not completely): love and health
In a volatile economy there’s never been a better time to adopt a mindset of Moving From Me to We – in personal, social and work life
If I won that kind of money, I would pay off my bills, buy a Saline Mustang and donate the rest. As for having only 10 years to live, I would live each day as I do now-like it is the first day of my life. And, who knows, maybe in those 10 years, a cure would be discovered or some wonder drug would be invented to allow me to live longer. I do know that hope, faith, love and living moment to moment and day to day would continue to be the mainstay in my life. Also, loved that movie, The Bucket List and the discovery that money can’t buy happiness, only family and friends.
