The air that I breathe – My 3 words for 2014

Chris Brogan started this in 2006 and I’ve been following it for a few years now. He encourages us to pick just 3 words that describe where our focus will be for the next 12 months. It’s not resolutions or goals but rather themes and words that capture your essence. Not too much work but enough that it is quite helpful, at least for me.

Amplify Integrity RhythmSo this year I picked 3 to focus on. I’m also sharing my why, to help you understand and maybe help me be accountable for them, and for me to refer back to throughout the year or at least at year end to see how my year went.

Amplify – Over the past 40 years, I built a solid foundation. My intention for 2014 is to take everything up to a whole new level, and amplify everything I do. I’ll also do this with by partnering with some smart people. One is already in place on The Shut Up Show, my video and podcast with Berni Xiong. More on partnership soon.

Integrity – I will do what I say and say what I do. This will mean when I say yes, I need to mean it and be able to deliver on that yes. It will also mean more noes as I can’t deliver on everything. Every no means a better yes is right around the corner, or already in place.

Rhythm – I’ve always resisted habits and patterns in my life because I thought they were boring. I resisted structure and sameness for the same reason. I’m realizing now I need to get into some good rhythms so I can be ready for curve balls that come my way. You’ll see these manifested in the form of publicly declared 21 Day Challenges on the Shut Up Show Facebook page and here on my site. The rhythm of exercise changed my life for the better the last 21 days so I understand their power now and am embracing it instead of fighting against it.

Coincidentally, or maybe not, these 3 words form the acronym AIR. And if you know me, you know I don’t believe in coincidences, so I will make these 3 words the air I breathe in 2014, and my intention is to live life with this air pumping through my system every day.

YOUR TURN: What about you? How did you prepare for 2014? Do you set resolutions? Goals? Intentions? Or are you still looking for a good rhythm?

If you don’t have a good rhythm, I encourage you to think of 3 words and set your intentions, even if you don’t look back at them over the year. I’ve found they help me even when I’m not aware of their presence.

  • Love this Phil! Every year I have one contextual word for the year (have been doing that for years too) and also have a theme. My theme for 2014 is Fitness (in all aspects spiritual, financial, relational, physical, educational, and soul fitness). Looking forward to seeing your successes in 2014!

  • Love it Phil! I am huge on saying NO to bad matches and yes to perfect matches. Clarity, or establishing contrast, what a tool in our arsenal, right?

    Thanks for the share!

  • Love these words Phil! Especially AMPLIFY!!

For me 2014 is about Shared Experiences and Breakthrough Results. Shared Experiences because I am a woman who loves to experience new places, adventures (of the non-skydiving kind), etc. – and I want to reach out more to my close friends and have them join me. Even if it means inviting a girlfriend to a movie instead of going by myself. There are travel experiences my husband and I want to share and have been putting off – this year I want to revisit the possibilities.

For me BREAKTHROUGH RESULTS – is much like your AMPLIFY. There are areas of my life where I’ve spent a lot of time learning and growing. (Weight loss, building a company – rather than a practice – etc. ) This year, I plan to take all that learning – my foundation – and consistently apply so I get those Breakthrough Results I’ve been looking for!!

Congrats on your many success! I look forward to watching you continue to soar!

  • Great words Phil! It’s amazing how rhythm can put us in the right mindset as well.

My words for this year are sawubona, temple, and in media res (explanations here” )

  • Resolutions to me are like promises. They have a knack of not happening which begs the question why we resolve or promise in the first place.

    I don’t do it.

There are many things I’d to accomplish this year — namely getting hired full-time as a brand evangelist (communications director, product manager, etc) and falling in love. But they’re not resolutions. More like goals.

“When someone first mentioned Phil to me 3 years ago, she described him this way: “He’s the real deal.” Every time I’ve spoken with or seen Phil interviewing or doing a public speaking gig since, that has proven true. Then, when I felt it was time for me to do some re-branding after over 10 successful years in business, I knew I wanted the benefit of a creative, energetic and smart soul to bounce ideas off of. I knew I wanted someone who grasps branding but works in realms not just narrowly focused on branding alone. Phil came immediately to mind. The results with Phil were exceptional. He pressed my thinking where I’d asked him to (and a few well-selected place I hadn’t!), proved a superb brainstorming and idea-generating partner, and invited me to deepen my thinking about some of the brand ideas I was considering. And he did it all with high energy, a sunny demeanor, and reliable timeliness. Phil Gerbyshak is the real deal indeed.”

“Phil understands social media as well as or better than anyone you will find – anywhere. Besides having a full understanding of the technical and strategic aspects of using Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs, etc., in your business, Phil brings high energy and enthusiasm to every project and speaking engagement. In short, Phil can help you figure out what to do, and get you fired up about doing it!”
