Perfect Social Media Advice

by Phil Gerbyshak on August 24, 2009

I’ve read a lot of great social media advice, and sometimes, all the things that I hear paralyze me. They paralyze me because there’s so much of it all. I get overwhelmed, and I don’t do anything.

Sometimes it prevents me from writing an article…because I’m worried about doing it just right.

Sometimes it prevents me from sending out a Tweet…because I don’t know all the rules.

Sometimes it prevents me from making a LinkedIn connection, from submitting a comment to someone’s website, or even from investing any brain cells in thinking about a new topic.

So I thought I’d wade through all the advice I’ve gotten over the years and distill it down to one thing.

Perfect Social Media Advice

one by moe Perfect Social Media Advice

Do one thing today.

Do ANYTHING today!

  • Set up a blog.
  • Write a new article.
  • Leave a comment on someone else’s blog.
  • Respond to a comment on your blog.
  • Send a tweet.
  • Connect with someone new.
  • Reconnect with someone old.
  • Tweak your profiles.
  • Upload a new picture to Flickr.
  • Say hi to an old friend on Facebook.
  • Greet a new friend.
  • Have coffee with someone you’ve never met in person before.
  • Do ONE THING today.
  • Then do ONE THING tomorrow.

Don’t worry about it too much.

It’ll be PERFECT…even if it’s not.

That’s my perfect social media advice.

What’s YOUR best advice?

Hilary – I’d rather do more than 1 too…but one is enough.

Learn something new…just 1 thing…each day. Great suggestion!

Perfect is right. I think people get too worried about what they are going to write, etc. I understand why they do because it is an extension of their personal brand or business brand. I spent 5 months trying to find my topic for blog discussion; I was worried about finding the right topic to write about and concerned with readability. Then, after I got over that hump and realized I just need to write about my passion and not be concerned if people actually read it, I have been flowing now for over a year and the brand is growing to levels I never imagined. Just do it! Oops, I stole the old Nike saying. :)

Pete – So glad you “just did it.” The world is a better place now that you’ve gotten over yourself and decided to just write. Des Moines is NOT boring…in no small part due to you! Great job!

Great advice, Phil. It reminds of one of my Dad’s sayings: “Do something even if it’s wrong.” We learn by doing. Reading, listening or watching may be helpful, but they’re really just practice. You have to play the game to have a chance of winning.

So now that I’ve made this comment, does that mean I can kick back the rest of the day? :-)
Sorry… forgot to say great post – can’t wait to read your next one!

George – Way to play the game. Nicely done.

And yes, I hope you took the rest of the day off…ON ME!

Phil – as always, you give great advice. Procrastinate is just not a word in your vocabulary. You are a very wise man of action. Thanks, and have a great day…
