Hello Phil,

Thank you so much for the topic!
I have just started on twitter, and I can tell you for sure it is really hard to get someone to either follow you or give you some credit. I don't know what I am doing, but I am pretty much alone on twitter.
There is this weird thing of porn people that comes and go, trying to sell their services. WTH? Such a dirty language! Maybe it is computer generated.
Well, just wanted to say thanks for your brilliant post!

Success!

Like everything else "social" on the internet, it's just like the real world. If you have real connections and they agree they are connected to you they (albeit maybe not the same ones) will follow you. If you have none, or you think you do but they don't connect back it will show up on Twitter. Twitter is NOT a place to collect faces as is true with Facebook. Trouble is, it's a lonely place for the unknown and unfollowed, and unflattering too. It was obviously designed to be more about the news and issues and less about the users. But it also discourages "nice" genuine interesting and smart people with few connections, but with things to say and a need to reach out...and I wish it didn't. I mean...is Experience Project (shudder and quake!) the ONLY thing left for people like that? I hope not, but I still haven't found a good networking place for me, so maybe I'm even a bigger loser than I thought. Conclusion: ok maybe I am a bigger loser than I thought, and maybe being a lonely person in this e-world will compound the punishment, and if that's true I should ditch the internet completely cause it keeps me from listening to the birds and the wind and the whispers from distant realms......and I'll be a lot less lonely doing it.

Great list Phil! I’m not getting flooded by new follower messages, but enough that it does take time to check them out and decide whether I will follow them back or not. Therefore having a ‘personal selection criteria’ about which ones you’ll follow back, and which ones you won’t is absolutely critical. (my pet hate is those with avatars showing off body parts I really don’t want to see…)

Now, what about blocking people? Do you want those creeps and weirdos seeing your tweets? Where do we draw the line there??

I really must make time to stop by here more often…

PS here in Australia we spell it ‘jiffy’

I agree with you Jack. No rule that says you have to follow back...or hold conversation...or anything. These are just my rules.

Users that hold in excess of 10,000 followers do not often engage in dialog, and if you are Oprah you have the right not to engage in dialog. There is no Twitter rule book that one must follow back every one that follows. I do not follow back Britney Sex Video but block the user and I do not follow back red necks.

You make a good point Korvenne. I try to post at least a few RTs and a few originals every day. Not just conversation.

Rick, here you go.

Giffy (defined by Phil Gerbyshak): done really quickly. I'll be there in a giffy.

I think a really really fast image file is a jpeggy, though I can't be sure :)
