Episode 8: Elevate Your Elevator Pitch

The concept of what a virtual assistant is and does is still relatively new, at least to the people I have encountered lately.  When they ask, “What do you do?”, I still struggle to give them an answer.  I liken it to being just like having an administrative/executive assistant in your office or place of business except I work from my home for you virtually.  This answer is still pretty vague and not a suitable response.  I found by creating an effective elevator speech I am now able to answer the question “what do you do?” in 60 seconds or less satisfactorily.  Whether you are looking for a job, looking for business, looking to make an impression, blue collar, white collar, full-time, part-time or seasonal, every working class citizen should have an elevator speech.  Practice describing who you are, what you do, how you do it, and most importantly, what your skill, product or service does for others in 60 seconds or less.  Focus on one of your biggest selling points. At the end of your pitch, ask if you can send them further information, exchange business cards, schedule a follow up meeting, presentation, or a referral.

“Hi, I’m Valerie Alba. I am a virtual assistant.  A VA partners with small businesses and entrepreneurs that need assistance with their administration tasks allowing them to grow their business and become more profitable. A VA carries out a range of creative and administrative tasks from their own home for a variety of clients, using their own computer and equipment.  I assist with correspondence management (letters, email marketing, reporting and presentations), social media networking (I can recommend platforms, set up profiles, find potential clients and networking groups and maintain communication), contact database management, website updates, article writing, research and bookkeeping.”

Advance your career to a higher level by enhancing your elevator speech.  See you on the top floor!
