Short story: As of today, I am the new director of social strategy for Actiance. And I am SO excited!!!!
Longer story: A few months ago, I had a conversation that changed how I thought about working for someone else. I always expected working for someone else meant I had to give up who I am and what I do. The conversation I had showed me this might not be true.
So I had an inkling that a job might actually be OK with me. If I didn’t have to move, could work with cool people, and do work that made a difference. And I wanted to still do training, speaking, and writing.
I did a lot of research about them. They felt like a good company. They were small enough I could make a difference, but big enough they wouldn’t be out of money in a few months.
I flew out to San Francisco and met with the team. Everyone, from the CEO down to the administrative assistant I met, said they make a difference, every day. I’d get to work with a team again, only with a virtual team.
And I had to make sure they fit me. I was full Phil when I talked to everyone, green glasses, big smile, and strong opinions. Very direct. And we clicked. They liked me. I liked them.
Then I waited. And waited. I’d forgotten how long companies have to take to make decisions, not for decisions sake, but for all the stuff you have to do to get to final decision. Background check. 14 page application. Formal job offer. You know the drill.
About 10 days after (it felt much longer), they offered me the job. I said yes!
And I start today – when all the kids are going back to school. A new beginning for me, and for kids across the US.
Living my dreams, doing MY THINGS with a company backing me, I could NOT be more excited.
And if you’re curious, I don’t need to move from Milwaukee (though one day I might want to, and I can and keep this role), I will still be working with financial professionals to leverage social media better, I will still be doing presentations and training.
Thanks for reading and being my friend!
